What does democracy sound like?

Christian Wolff was born in Nice in 1934. His parents, the German publishing couple Kurt and Helen Wolff, initially fled the Nazis to France and eventually found a new home in the United States.

At a young age, Wolff met the composer John Cage – an encounter that had a lasting impact on his artistic thinking. Both shared a shared search for new, unconventional, and free forms of musical expression. Today, Christian Wolff lives in the USA.

Although he largely taught himself how to compose, his close ties to figures such as John Cage, Morton Feldman, David Tudor, Earle Brown, Frederic Rzewski, and Cornelius Cardew played a central role in his development.
