25 years of African cultural salons
With MoKATO Reloaded, Berlin is celebrating the return of the legendary African cultural salon, MoKATO, to its historic location at Schlesisches Tor, now known as Bi NUU, a quarter of a century later.
This special occasion will bring together musicians, poets and activists of different generations and from various countries for an evening of concerts, jam sessions, poetry, film screenings and open mic moments.
Between 2000 and 2002, MoKATO was one of the first regular meeting places in Berlin for the African and diaspora arts and culture scenes. Seeing itself as a bridge between continents, languages and ways of life, the salon contributed to the development of a polyphonic, postcolonial understanding of culture in the capital.
'Nit Nitay Garabam – People are the healing power of people' was the motto at the time and still characterises the spirit of the event today: encounter as a medium of cultural healing and social connection.
