Former Beastie Boys member Mike D was recently in Germany to present the exhibition “Mishpocha. The Art of Collaboration,” which he co-curated, at the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt.

In an interview with “Der Spiegel” at the opening, he said: “I have a background in collaboration. I often think about the fact that you can write a song for someone else or play it for them.”

The wild power of artistic collaboration shaped the Beastie Boys’ work—when Michael Diamond, Adam Yauch, and Adam Horovitz were in a room together and bouncing ideas off each other, anything could happen.

But even when Mike D released solo songs, they always sounded a bit like a team sport. And that also applies to the concerts Mike D will be playing in Europe this summer.

The music you can expect there is best described as “psych jazz funk.” Judging by the single “A Lot,” released in January, it’s bound to be exciting: He raps over a piano melody and subtle beats, yet still manages to build an energy usually found only in the thrilling, wild corners of jazz.
