Kornél Mundruczó | Kata Wéber
"This is all just a load of crap! I want out of here! This is a load of crap, not a film story!"
Known for their international work in theater, opera, and film, playwright and screenwriter Kata Wéber and director Kornel Mundruczó, in their second joint production at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, explore the interplay and reality of authoritarian structures at the intersection of theater and film with their play, Method.
Together with the acting ensemble—Ann Göbel, Zarah Kofler, Johanna Wokalek, Maximilian Brauer, Benny Claessens, Martin Wuttke, Sir Henry, and Soma Boronkay—Mundruczó and Wéber develop the storyline through improvisation, metaphorically addressing current discourses on power, authoritarianism, and dependencies, whose dynamics ultimately claim all victims in the play.
The game itself is where it all begins: At what point does the intention to transform become a transgression, or even an abuse, no longer protected by any fiction? What dangers does the supposed "safe space" of art harbor, and what behavior is legitimate?
It is no coincidence that the title *Method* is borrowed from an American version of Strasberg's Stanislavski-based naturalistic acting technique, which demands the highest possible empathy from the actors. Here, it stands paradigmatically for the question of the boundary between the actors and the personality of the character they embody.
*Method* also explores the fundamental mechanisms by which a community and society protect and legitimize their own oppressors, and examines the behavior of perpetrators, accomplices, and opportunists who gradually destroy everyone and everything around them. *Method* is the sheer horror of a film shoot and a self-reflexive farce mocking a horror film.
