Understanding Prison
Once a vibrant Palestinian refugee camp and an integral part of Damascus, Yarmouk became a scene of extreme state violence after the 2011 revolution. Following mass protests in 2012, the Assad regime and its allied militias imposed a brutal siege.
The civilian population was cut off from food, medicine, and aid supplies. “Besiege, starve, and force surrender” became the regime’s strategy.
The experiences in Yarmouk reveal alarming parallels to Gaza. Humanitarian aid structures are being systematically destroyed, supply routes disrupted, and civilians endangered by the deprivation of vital resources.
The seventh edition of the discussion series “Understanding Prison: MENA Prison Forum in Berlin” combines music, eyewitness accounts, and dialogue. The evening begins with a concert by pianist Aeham Ahmad, a survivor of the Yarmouk hunger blockade, accompanied on the oud by activist Wassim Mukdad.
A panel discussion will follow.
