*Martin Parr (1952, Epsom, Surrey, UK) is one of the most important British documentary photographers and photojournalists.

He gained international recognition for his large-format, colorful photographs that take a humorous look at British society. With his ironic and socially critical perspective on everyday situations, he has made photographic history.

The exhibition Martin Parr. Early Works focuses on the early work of the MAGNUM photographer and presents 75 rarely shown black-and-white photographs. Birdwatching club activities in Surrey, pilgrimages to the Pope in Ireland, holidays in the Scottish Highlands, provincial football matches, and traditional village fairs are just some of the social events that captured the interest of the young Martin Parr. Exaggeration and emphasis — two key elements of his work — run like a common thread through the photographs. The strength of his images lies in the precise observation of everyday situations and their focus on the seemingly mundane. Local traditions, street life, and the island’s unpredictable weather: Martin Parr encourages us to take a second look and to discover the quirky and humorous sides of life.

At first glance, the photographs may appear nostalgic or romantic, but Martin Parr questions the subjects of his images and their seemingly ordinary actions. With an almost anthropological interest, he dissects human behavior, prompting reflection and highlighting — in both a humorous and critical way — the complexity and absurdity of modern life.
