Silent film with organ accompaniment

The magic of silent film is experiencing a remarkable renaissance – not least thanks to the unique fascination emanating from live musical accompaniment.

In the heyday of silent film, the cinema organ often took on the role of an entire orchestra – with astonishing sonority and expressiveness.

Today, the classical church organ is following in its footsteps: with thousands of pipes, it lends a powerful, emotional voice to humorous slapstick scenes, tender romances, or dramatic chases.

The Berlin organist David Schirmer combines his work as a concert organist with a special passion: improvised silent film accompaniment. He regularly brings historical films to life with musical sensitivity.

THE MARRIAGE CIRCLE (1924 | Ernst Lubitsch | Comedy | 92 min.)

The marriage of Mizzi and Joseph Stock is in trouble. She torments him with many petty meannesses, and he has a detective follow her in the hope of finding a reason for divorce. Meanwhile, Mizzi's long-time girlfriend marries an attractive psychiatrist, whose colleague, Gustav, unfortunately, can't overcome his crush on the bride. When Mizzi begins to brazenly flirt with the psychiatrist, everything comes full circle—one could say. A disaster that provides this elegant comedy with a seemingly endless source of amusing moments.
