Life in the GDR

The photo exhibition, initiated by the Lichtenberg Economic Development Agency, is part of Berlin Freedom Week 2025 and is a tourist attraction that draws visitors from all over Berlin and beyond.

The project is dedicated to the quiet, personal moments of freedom, creativity and self-determination in life in the GDR.

On display are historical photographs from the 1960s to the 1980s that were taken beyond the state's staging and offer an immediate, human view of everyday life, leisure, friendship, family and holidays in East Germany.

The exhibition ‘Die kleine Freiheit – Leben in der DDR’ (Small Freedom – Life in the GDR) can be seen at the Wellenwerk Berlin from 12 to 16 November 2025.

The opening hours are Wednesday to Friday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The exhibition is curated by the agency DDR Fotoerbe.

Admission is free. The project is funded by the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises through funds for special tourism projects.

The opening will take place on 11 November 2025 at 5 p.m. and will be hosted by District Mayor Martin Schaefer. This will be followed by a panel discussion with some of the photographers.
