50 years of Lehnin Summer Music Festival
Georg Friedrich Handel's oratorio “Theodora” concludes this year's Lehnin Summer Music Festival program. Renowned soloists, the Berlin Baroque Ensemble, and the festival choir, founded especially for the 50th anniversary, will perform this musical highlight in the atmospheric setting of Lehnin Abbey Church.
Theodora, premiered in London in 1750, is one of Handel's late masterpieces. Although it initially received little attention during the composer's lifetime, it is now considered one of his most expressive oratorios. In three acts, Handel tells the touching story of the young Christian woman Theodora and her lover Didymus. In a time of religious persecution, the two stand up for their faith – a decision that leads to their death, but can also be understood as an act of deepest love and spiritual conviction.
Between delicate arias, dramatic choruses, and gripping instrumentation, a work unfolds that is both emotionally touching and musically inspiring.
