Philippe Quesne / Vivarium Studio

Philippe Quesne, one of France's most important theater directors, brings together a small, slightly eccentric group in his new work, a group that humorously and melancholically questions the role of art in everyday life. It's a subtle exploration of loneliness, community, and the magic of the mundane.

"Le Paradoxe de John" (John's Paradox) is a continuation of one of Philippe Quesne's earliest works, which captivated audiences in an unmistakable way: in 2007, the director portrayed a solitary individual in "L'Effet de Serge" (Serge's Effect), who organizes small shows for his friends on Sundays, inviting them into his unique and fragile fantasy world.

In Quesne's new work, the focus shifts to a small group of friends who together create an art gallery. On stage, a universe unfolds that is both humorous and poetic, comprised of animated objects, a pianola, and foam sculptures.

The piece once again explores the place of art in everyday life, as musical and visual inventions intersect with the poetically idiosyncratic texts of Laura Vazquez. Between striking effects and absurd situations, a theater of intimacy emerges, uniting people and objects in a shared, atmospheric composition and emphasizing the necessity of the artistic act, however small.
