Magdalena Scharler and Jenny Helene Wübbe
Two actresses and a hundred-year-old teddy bear. With their combined strength, they resist the tide of time: Why is military preparedness sexy again, and peace a thing of the past? What even is war? And where does it begin—within or without?
With childlike earnestness, wild imagination, and a wealth of insightful books in tow, the three venture into NATO headquarters. Surely they must know! Why do humans wage war against each other? And is peace even possible? Voices and images from the past emerge: the 20th and 21st centuries, at first clearly distinguishable, then indistinguishable. The horror, the fear, the small, profound joys of Christmas. They do not know the future, the end.
The theater makers Magdalena Scharler and Jenny Wübbe have been artistically connected for many years through their work together in the award-winning independent Berlin theater ensemble syn:format. Magdalena Scharler works as a freelance actress and director in Germany and Switzerland. Developing new pieces is at the heart of her work; in 2014 she founded syn:format. Jenny Helene Wübbe, a freelance performing artist, combines acting, dance, and text.
The production WAR OR PEACE, funded by the Ministry of Culture and European Affairs of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is her first piece developed as a duo and will premiere in 2026.
