Keynote speech on the 340th anniversary of the Edict of Potsdam
As part of the Huguenot Refuge Festival, the French Church in Berlin invites you to a keynote lecture by Prof. Dr. Fritz Lienhard (University of Heidelberg).
The Edict of Potsdam from 1685 still stands today as a symbol of religious tolerance and cultural exchange. Prof. Lienhard, a theologian and expert in practical theology, draws a connection to the present in his lecture:
How can Protestant churches gain new relevance in an increasingly secular society?
"Religion is not disappearing—it is changing," says Lienhard. In his recently published German book, *The Future of the Protestant Church: Religious Developments and Church Reforms*, he describes how faith is becoming more personal, diverse, and closer to life: God, figuratively speaking, is moving from the pulpit into people's everyday lives.
Lienhard advocates for an open church that gains new strength through dialogue, listening, and joint action—instead of focusing solely on structural reforms. "The future of the church will be determined by how it speaks to people – and how it listens to them," he emphasizes.
