Experiences of Sinti*zze under National Socialism
On November 20, 2025, voices, memories and perspectives of an often overlooked history will come together at the Mitte Museum. Under the title "Jewish-Muslim Salon meets Sinti", the evening is dedicated to the memory of the persecution and murder of the Sinti*zze under National Socialism - and at the same time asks how young people today deal with this history and their own identity.
The focus is on the documentary "Auschwitz verlassen?" (2024) by Margitta Steinbach(Menda yek e.V.). The filmmaker accompanies members of her association on a trip to Auschwitz: older Sinti*zze who revisit the place where their families were exterminated, and young people who find their way between the shadows of the past and their own future. The film tells of grief, courage and hope - and shows how memory can become a bridge between generations.
After the screening, Margitta Steinbach and other protagonists will talk about the importance of memory and identity in the present. The evening will be accompanied by Manolito Steinbach and the Romani Weiss Swingtett, who will create moments of pause, connection and musical resistance with their reading and musical performance "Between the Notes of Life".
For seven years, the Jewish-Muslim Salon at the German-Muslim Center has been a place of dialogue between Jewish and Muslim people. With this edition, it is opening up to the public space for the first time in order to give space to the voices of the Sinti*zze together with the Mitte Museum - for exchange, listening and encounters. An evening that builds bridges between past and present, between memory and hope.
Admission is free. Registration is not required.
The event is sponsored by the Action Fund for the Support of Projects against Anti-Semitism.
