Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio, composed in 1734, is one of the composer's best-known and most popular sacred works. In its complete version, it comprises six cantatas that were originally performed in Leipzig during the festive season between Christmas and Epiphany.
In the tradition of Baroque Christmas stories, the work recounts the birth of Jesus according to the Gospels of Luke and Matthew. Bach combines the festive radiance of magnificent choral settings with the heartfelt piety of his arias and chorales.
The Christmas Oratorio is still considered a high point of Baroque church music today – and for many people, attending a performance during Advent and Christmas has become a cherished tradition.
