These questions have been the subject of intense debate for decades. Twenty-five years ago, the International Expert Commission “Historical Center of Berlin” presented a widely acclaimed vision for the future of Berlin’s Spree Island.
Its recommendations were highly controversial but have significantly shaped the development of this central location: the demolition of the Palace of the Republic and the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace as the Humboldt Forum have redefined Berlin’s city center.
To mark the anniversary, the Humboldt Forum invites you to take a fresh look at the Spree Island. The focus is on the defining visions, conflicts, and hopes, as well as current challenges. Finally, we explore the future of the Spree Island and its neighborhood, including the Marx-Engels Forum and the site of the Bauakademie.
In a multi-voiced discussion, experts from urban development, architecture, politics, and civil society will come together. On the panel will be Franziska Eichstädt-Bohlig, a former member of the International Expert Commission; Manfred Kühne, long-time head of the Department of Urban Planning and Projects at the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development, Construction, and Housing; and Leslie Quitzow from the Federal Foundation Bauakademie. Architectural historian and journalist Matthias Grünzig will introduce the topic and moderate the discussion.
