What happens to music when one is guided by trust and the tools of improvisational theater: when one stops trying to be interesting and instead tries to be interested? When musical vitality and playful openness gain the upper hand over perfection and the pursuit of popularity.
Cellists Simon Hoffmann and Moritz Ebert shape sounds in the moment and compose in real time: free improvisation—playing with the unknown.
Moritz Ebert and Simon Hoffmann are two Berlin-based cellists who meet at the intersection of classical tradition and free improvisation. Their musical backgrounds differ: Moritz’s classical path through the conservatory took him from Graz to Vienna before he moved to Berlin and turned to jazz, folk music, and free improvisation. He is a co-founder of the improvisational trio Softblock and a member of the board of the 1781 Collective, which reimagines the presentation of classical music. Simon’s path through the conservatory took him through Berlin, Paris, and New York and includes seven seasons with the Israel Philharmonic, with whom he toured worldwide. During these tours, he launched electronically influenced projects such as Frozen Fields, OPTN, Mohobrac, and L.o.O.P., which combined the cello with electronic music and club culture. Together, they perform with the Berlin improvisational theater group “Die Gorillas” in “Hello Cello.”
The event will be held in English.
