Diane Arbus is considered one of the most visionary and influential photographic artists of the 20th century. With her striking black-and-white images, she radically questioned common notions of beauty and reality, thus leaving a lasting mark on the history of photography.

With "Diane Arbus: Constellations," the Gropius Bau is presenting the most comprehensive exhibition of her work to date. Many of the 454 photographs are being seen publicly for the first time, opening up new perspectives on the artist's iconic portraits and extraordinarily diverse oeuvre.

Arbus spent a large part of her artistic life—from the late 1950s until her death in 1971—in New York City. There, she created a multifaceted, striking portrait of everyday American life in the postwar period. Her subjects range from couples, children, and passersby to drag performers, nudists, and circus artists, as well as intellectuals like Susan Sontag and stars like Mae West and James Brown.

The retrospective at the Gropius Bau unfolds as a labyrinthine "constellation" of photographs – without a fixed chronology or thematic order. Visitors are invited to wander freely through the spaces, discover connections between the images, and sense their own resonances.

"Diane Arbus: Constellations" is organized by LUMA Arles in collaboration with the Gropius Bau, Berlin. Curated by Matthieu Humery (Curator at Large, LUMA Arles).
Exhibition management at the Gropius Bau: Lisa Tietze, Project Management.
