18th JAZZDOR STRASBOURG-BERLIN FESTIVAL

On the final evening of the Jazzdor festival, the door to the world will open with projects whose sound draws inspiration from the diverse countries of origin of the band members.

GARDEN OF SILENCES

FR/NO/DE Clément JANINET violin, Arve HENRIKSEN trumpet, Ambre VILLERMOZ accordion, Robert LUCACIU double bass

The quartet led by French violinist Clément Janinet, featuring Norwegian Arve Henriksen, Frenchwoman Ambre Vuillermoz, and German Robert Lucaciu, is a prime example of cross-border creativity. It further advances the aesthetic developed in O.U.R.S. or La Litanie des Cimes—the fusion of free improvisation with classical repetitive music—with new partners who come from yet other horizons. In the dialogue between violin, trumpet, accordion, and double bass, the boundaries of repertoire and genre dissolve: the baroque soundscape meets that of the Swedish nyckelharpa or microtonal music, improvisation meets contemporary chamber music and folk traditions of all kinds. Music that could not be closer to the pulse of the times and yet seems timeless.

MOSAÏC

FR/BG/PT/TN Adèle VIRET, cello, Georgi DOBREV, kaval, Noé CLERC, accordion, Zé ALMEIDA, double bass, Diogo ALEXANDRE, drums, Hamdi JAMMOUSSI, percussion

The Mosaïc sextet brings together six musicians from Bulgaria, France, Portugal, and Tunisia, tracing the contours of a Mediterranean region with expanded boundaries. Their compositions open up spaces of encounter at the intersection of jazz and Mediterranean music by combining Balkan ornamentation with European chamber music sounds and the rhythmic essence of North African traditions.

From contemporary grooves and the sounds of the Bulgarian kaval and accordion to the woody tones of the double bass and cello, the group explores the imaginary, allowing musical cultures to fall into place like small stones forming a sonic mosaic. The composition of this collaborative project finds its richness in the details of each individual voice and transforms improvisation and oral tradition into a powerfully orchestrated space.
