25 years of cinema culture

From 20 to 26 November, French Film Week celebrates its 25th anniversary this year – a significant milestone for the traditional festival, which has been dedicated to promoting French and Francophone cinema in Germany for a quarter of a century.

Initiated by the Institut français d'Allemagne and Unifrance Films, in close cooperation with the Yorck Kinogruppe, this year's festival once again showcases the diversity and creative power of French cinema with a selection of 31 films.

The 2025 programme is as varied as it is promising: It kicks off on 20 November with a festive opening gala at the traditional Delphi Filmpalast in Berlin – this year's opening film is François Ozon's eagerly awaited adaptation of Camus's ‘The Stranger’. The Arsenal on Location will then host a retrospective of the acclaimed director Lucile Hadžihalilović, who has had a lasting impact on French cinema with her unique style. The festival focuses primarily on young audiences at the weekend with a selection of films and a supporting programme for children, young people and families. In addition, the French Film Week also shows exclusive, previously unreleased films that will not be shown in the regular cinema programme – including selected entries from Cannes.

As always, however, the programme focuses on numerous previews – many of the films shown have not yet been released in German cinemas and will celebrate their preview premiere during French Film Week. Many of the screenings will be accompanied by discussion evenings with directors, actors and filmmakers, giving the audience a direct insight into the making and background of the films.
