Markus Wiehler, an original (East) Berliner born in 1968, will take
you on a Freedom Walk at the historic Bernauer Straße Memorial.
you on a Freedom Walk at the historic Bernauer Straße Memorial.
Right in the middle of the former death strip, he explains the feeling of
lack of freedom and what it was like to be a teenager in East Berlin in the late
1980s. He recounts the escape attempt of a friend, which landed him in prison
for a year, showing what can happen when you strive for freedom.
Markus himself fulfilled his desire for freedom with a daring escape in January 1988 via Paris, moving to West Berlin. But he also shares that living in freedom in West Berlin was not always easy.
The walk is accompanied by original photos from that time, and even includes the chance to see an original 1983 DDR Trabant.
