Professor Audrey Truschke, who teaches South Asian history at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, will address the tense debate surrounding Indian history in her guest lecture at the BBAW on 20 November 2025.
In her talk, Professor Truschke will explore the contentious landscape of Indian history. She'll address how popular (mis)understandings of the past, including claims of ancient scientific progress and homogeneous premodern societies, are often used to project strangely modern ideas onto Indian history. She'll offer counter-narratives that recover specific features of India's knowledge systems and cosmopolitan traditions, while also examining how these historical claims are intertwined with contemporary political and social dynamics.
The event will take place on 20 November 2025 at 4 p.m. in the Leibniz Hall of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) here in Berlin.
We encourage early registration to ensure a spot; registration details can be found on the event page at https://www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/event/fieldnotes-battles-over-indian-history-society-and-sciences.
