Series of Discussions Widerständiges Feiern III, curated by Fabienne Mahwane
When you think of ballroom, you think of fascinating outfits, eloquent MCs, and expressive dancing. Ballroom is the epitome of festivity as resistance, as it has been a space for Black and Latinx queer and trans people, in particular, to live out their identities, recognize each other, and engage in community care.
Since the 1980s at the latest, however, ballroom culture has been brought into the mainstream by major pop stars from Madonna to Beyoncé. This leads to greater visibility, but at the same time, appropriation and exploitation also mean the depoliticization and invisibility of social struggles.
They will discuss how Festivity can take place in this field of tension with Black people who play a key role in shaping and influencing ballroom culture in Germany: Jade Joana Mugisha, Sedami Gracia, Elvis, Theodor Ophelia Azilinon, and Seyram Deh.
The evening will be moderated by Georgina Philp.
The discussion series "Resistant Celebration," which explores the political and resistant dimensions of celebration, was conceived specifically for the Black Berlin Black – Festivity festival by Fabienne Mahwane, a qualified lawyer, moderator, and speaker.
(in spoken German with interpretation in German spoken and sign language (DGS))
