Remember, explore, engage
On Saturday, 7 March 2026, HeimatHavel, a project of the Spandau church district, and its cooperation partners invite you to a big action day for a voyage of discovery in the new Waterkant development area.
The action day brings the history, present and community of the new Spandau neighbourhood Waterkant to life.
Under the motto ‘Remember, explore, engage,’ visitors can embark on an interactive discovery tour and uncover historical traces that often remain invisible in everyday life. The area's former industrial, military and labour heritage will be brought to life through historically significant stops along the way.
Bringing history to life
Experts will be on hand to provide information at various stations from 2 to 4 p.m.:- Stumbling block for Nazi forced labourers at Christophoruskirche with Kirche.Kiez.Kultur (Schuckertdamm 336, 13629 Berlin)
- Gewobag museum apartment with the Haselhorst community association (Burscheider Weg 21, 13599 Berlin)
- Christmas Church (Haselhorster Damm 54, 13599 Berlin)
- Barracks of the forced labour camp (Rhenaniastraße/Am Havelgarten, 13599 Berlin) with the Youth History Workshop
- HeimatHavel (Schwielowseestr. 20, 13599 Berlin) with the Spandau Church District
The stations not only provide explanatory information and an accompanying brochure, but also offer the opportunity to delve into local history in conversations with experts.
From 4 p.m., the reception at HeimatHavel invites visitors to exchange ideas and enjoy refreshments.
Project coordinator Mareike Haley explains:
‘With new construction projects, the narrative is often: “There was nothing there before!”. Over the next few months, we want to make the history of the Waterkant accessible and show what was there before. We look forward to exploring history with the citizens of Spandau!’
A project with perspective – offers until autumn
The action day marks the start of a series of diverse formats that will run until autumn and create different approaches, from bicycle tours and creative workshops to the big democracy festival on 26 September.
The events are aimed at residents, neighbours, artists, history enthusiasts and families.
