In her exhibition, Echoes of the Fjord, Nina Tobien presents paintings that draw inspiration from the materiality of landscapes and elemental forces in Berlin and Iceland.
Pigments from mineral and plant sources react to moisture and temperature, and canvases were dyed in an Icelandic fjord and then exposed to snow and the northern lights. The result is multi-layered colour fields in which natural processes, time and artistic control converge.
The works combine painterly, ceramic and sonic elements to form an open system that renders the processes of becoming and passing away visible.
Tobien's approach reflects the relationship between matter and atmosphere, reverberation and transformation, a quiet, precise echo of the resonance between place, material and memory.
