Josef Kaiser (1910–1991) is regarded as one of the most influential architects of the GDR. Between 1950 and 1984, he played a key role in the design of numerous, predominantly prestigious state buildings. His modern designs along Berlin’s Karl-Marx-Allee, which were seen as an expression of the GDR’s cultural identity, attracted international attention.

Kino International, 2026, Entwurf: Kollektiv Josef Kaiser
Many of his buildings, including the iconic Kino International, are now listed as historic monuments. For the first time, this exhibition explores his life and work through drawings, collages, photographs, films and models, whilst highlighting political and aesthetic tensions. Contemporary perspectives offer new insights into his legacy as part of the architectural history of the two Germanys.
