Chodowiecki in the DHM’s collections

Using selected original works – single-sheet prints, series of copperplate engravings, rare en bloc print sheets and ‘book plates’ – Dr Wolfgang Cortjaens and the team from the Prints and Drawings Collection will present the German Historical Museum’s extensive Chodowiecki collection in four workshops, each lasting approximately 45 minutes.

The focus is, on the one hand, on the graphic engraving and printing techniques employed, from which Chodowiecki developed his unmistakable, finely detailed style, and, on the other hand, on the refinement of production processes that ushered in a renaissance of printmaking in the second half of the 18th century.

This went hand in hand with a rise in the number of illustrated publications, such as almanacs, novels, plays and journals, to which Chodowiecki – as one of the leading engravers of his era – made significant contributions in each case. In this age of fast-paced digital imagery, the event aims to invite visitors to engage with the originals, to look closely and to ‘read the traces’.

Organised by: Dr Wolfgang Cortjaens, Head of the Applied Arts and Prints Collection; Dr Matthias Miller, Head of the Library and Head of the Manuscripts – Rare and Valuable Prints Collection.
