For his exhibition PROTOTYP at the Kleiner Wasserspeicher, Berlin-based artist Constantin Hartenstein has created spatial installations made of steel and glass that explore the establishment and reproduction of standards. Hartenstein views these as cultural mechanisms that structure social reality, perception, and behavior.

The works span a spectrum ranging from industrial mass production, through written and unwritten norms within mainstream German society, to expectations regarding bodies, sexuality, national consciousness, and fears. His minimalist, staged situations reveal how standards give rise to forms that appear self-evident and thus help shape realities.

Prototypes typically serve to prepare for serial production and to test functionality. Hartenstein’s works take up this logic and shift it: they appear simultaneously as models, stages, and condensations of a society and its codes
