New Year's Eve concert on 30 December 2024
Richard Wagner was fascinated by it throughout his life, while Hermann Hesse rejected its "vulgar" finale. In the 1920s, the German workers' singing movement celebrated it with mass events, while Claude Debussy saw it devalued by the general public.
Thomas Mann's Adrian Leverkühn even wanted to take it back forever. Since 1948, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra has regularly performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the turn of the year – not out of tradition, but because this work continually inspires people worldwide to rise up and reach for the stars.
