Claudia Hauptmann was born in Eisenach in 1966. She has lived and worked in Berlin since 2006. In 2004, she received the Art Prize and a working grant from the European Women's Forum.
When asked about his favorite book, Bertolt Brecht is said to have replied, "You'll laugh. The Bible!" Even the atheist Brecht appreciated the Book of Books as an inexhaustible collection of human destinies, entanglements, conflicts, guilt and despair, failures, catastrophes, the search for God and for a reason to exist, and the grand connection of it all: love.
Claudia Hauptmann's paintings tell of errors and calamities, of the difficult relationship between humanity and nature, of humanity's threat to itself, of its desires and greed, its hubris, and yet simultaneously attempt to express the hope that love, forgiveness, and harmony with creation are possible. In this way, the artist consciously draws on the ancient imagery of the Bible and its diverse interpretations throughout art history.
