The exhibition ‘Claude Lanzmann. The Recordings’ pays tribute to the work of the important documentary filmmaker Claude Lanzmann and provides insights into the audio archive of his film Shoah, which is being presented for the first time – a unique contemporary document that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023.
On the occasion of the 100th birthday of Claude Lanzmann (1925-2018), the Jewish Museum Berlin is showing a special exhibition of his work from 27 November 2025 to 12 April 2026.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is the audio archive of his epochal film Shoah (1985), which is being made accessible for the first time. The collection, which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2023, comprises 152 previously unpublished magnetic audio cassettes. These document the conversations that Lanzmann and his team conducted with survivors, perpetrators and others during the intensive research in the 1970s and early 1980s.
Supplemented by original objects, documents and film footage, the exhibition provides a unique insight into Lanzmann's work process and the making of one of the most important documentaries in history.
