The sociologist and long-standing President of the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) Prof. Dr. Jutta Allmendinger conducts research into the sociology of the labour market and the sociology of education, social inequality and social policy as well as the sociology of the life course. Allmendinger also deals extensively with gender relations and the possibilities of achieving gender equality.
In her lecture "Classism and a lack of educational equality", she will illustrate how closely children's educational paths and successes are linked to their social background and the educational level of their parents.
If the parents have a high level of education, there is a high probability that the children will also achieve a high level of education, i.e. educational success is socially 'inherited'. This effect can be observed at many levels, regardless of the child's performance, from elementary school, the educational qualifications achieved, as well as the probability of aiming for and completing academic vocational training.
Opportunities for catch-up education and further training are scarce and the German education system tends to promote a social divide in society.
