As Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, elementary schools across the country were transformed into recruiting grounds for the war. Against the backdrop of this ethical dilemma—working within a system defined by propaganda and violence—a courageous teacher films what is really happening at his own school.
Pasha has spent his entire life in the small industrial town of Karabash, on the eastern edge of the southern Urals. Today, he works as a teacher, video chronicler, and events coordinator at his former school and enjoys the students' complete trust. His office is a refuge for them, a place to breathe, talk, and spend time together without worry.
With the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Pasha's duties change radically: The children are once again learning about the glorious victories of the Soviet Union and are forced to rehearse military parades. Wagner mercenaries visit the school and display their weapons. Initially, Pasha responds to the propaganda with small acts of subversion, but as the war progresses, the situation becomes increasingly oppressive. Almost all the children have brothers or fathers at the front, whose lives they fear for, and former students are being drafted.
Pasha begins using his camera to document these developments. His footage provides powerful insights into a country at war.
