Chuma Chuma is a dance practice that combines various dance styles with movements from Tanzanian dance traditions. The workshop focuses on helping participants develop movements rooted in their own personal identities, rather than simply copying choreographies.

In Swahili, “Chuma” means “iron” or “to select.” These meanings reflect the workshop’s metaphor: breaking through movement boundaries, developing flexibility, and transforming movements through exploration and selection in the creative process.

In this workshop, participants will combine and explore different qualities of movement—shaping them, questioning them, playfully altering them, and blending them together. The goal is to encourage the body to discover new movements and personal stories through dance.

The course also includes brief moments of reflection for checking in and out, as well as sharing stories about dance movements from Dar es Salaam. A short Q&A session at the end allows participants to reflect on their experiences.
