The BBA Gallery presents Pixel Desires, the first solo exhibition by award-winning video artist and director Chris Kondek. For the first time, Kondek transfers his long-standing exploration of digital systems from the theater context to the visual space of the gallery.
PIXELS AS PROTAGONISTS
Pixels usually go unnoticed. In Pixel Desires, they take center stage. Kondek makes them the main actors and examines how algorithmic systems shape our perception through hidden rules and structures.
The starting point for each work is a photograph that is transformed using a specially developed algorithm. Over more than 2,000 iterations, each individual pixel shifts along a simulated logic of flows and turbulence.
The resulting images are reminiscent of eroded landscapes and pulsating data streams. They reflect how contemporary visual worlds are profoundly shaped by invisible systems of control and regulation.
Chris Kondek is a Berlin-based video artist and director who began his career in New York with The Wooster Group and worked with Laurie Anderson. Since 1999, he has made his mark on European stages with video designs for directors such as Falk Richter and Sebastian Baumgarten. In 2012, he received the Faust Prize for “Quijote: Trip Zwischen Welten” (Quijote: Trip Between Worlds).
Together with Christiane Kühl, he founded the collective doublelucky productions. Since 2023, Kondek and Kühl have held a joint visiting professorship at the Berlin University of the Arts.
