Cinema Surreal

Cinema Surreal presents a documentary about perhaps the most important Surrealist film director: Luis Buñuel. Un Chien Andalou, which he made with Salvador Dalí, is often cited as the first and most important Surrealist film, primarily because of the indelible scene in which a lover cuts his lover's eye with a razor, like a cloud drifting across the sky before the romantic moon. But Buñuel's work is much greater!

With masterpieces like Les Verses and Les Discreetes Charme des Bourgeoisie, the Spanish director has secured his place in film history. Documentary filmmaker Javier Espada offers "a deep and unique insight into the career of one of the most important directors of the 20th century, his past, his development, and his work, which has not only significantly influenced and forever changed cinema but the entire art world," as the film's distributor states.

And Javier Espada doesn't just tell the story of Luis Buñuel. In a dramatic composition, he presents excerpts from all the unforgettable films of the great surrealist. Perhaps a glimpse of what awaits you at Cinema Surreal 2026.

Thirty years ago, the taz newspaper quoted the theologian Eugen Drewermann, who stated that Luis Buñuel and Surrealism were "applied psychoanalysis" (taz, March 15, 1994).
