Surroundings 3: Transitions – Transitions between this world and the next, but also the belief in the transcendence of the otherworld into this world: A true Christmas theme, reinterpreted.
During the Christmas season, anticipation and arrival, hope and transformation are central themes. In these "Surroundings," the audience listens closely once again to the hopes and messages in all their breadth from three very different settings from the Baroque period.
The year 2025 marks the 300th anniversary of the death of composer and organ expert Arnold Matthias Brunckhorst, who worked in Hildesheim and Hanover. This is reason enough to present his small but enchanting Christmas oratorio.
A star in his time, little known today: Johann David Heinichen from Leipzig made his way to Dresden via Venice. His magnificent "Magnificat" (No. 2 in B-flat major) sets the Latin anticipation of Christmas to music.
The counterpoint is Johann Sebastian Bach's complex chorale cantata "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" (BWV 61).
