In this country, the tradition, cultural history, and diverse flavor profiles of Japan’s national drink are still largely unknown. Yet sake opens up a whole new world of flavors: floral, umami, dry, or surprisingly fresh.

Sticks’n’Sushi, in collaboration with expert Eric Walsh from Ueno Gourmet, offers the perfect opportunity to discover the diversity of sake: during an enjoyable introduction on June 10 at the restaurant on Kantstraße.

The tasting will focus on three different sakes that showcase the drink’s qualities as a meal accompaniment. To complement this, the Sticks’n’Sushi team has created dishes that either highlight or contrast the characteristics of the drinks. The evening begins with a fruity, charming aperitif, the Ninki Sparkling. This bottle-fermented sake features a fine effervescence that refreshes and opens the palate.

This is followed by a Snow Crystal, brewed with very soft snowmelt water and the brewery’s own yeast. This sake is particularly well-suited to delicately spiced dishes or tender grilled highlights. The Kimoto Tradition is also featured—a sake with an umami flavor and subtle acidity. Thanks to its complexity, it pairs well with almost any dish. To finish, a glass of Umeshu is served with dessert. This artisanal plum sake, made with sugarcane shochu, is a digestif whose unique character leaves a lasting impression.

Expert Eric Walsh hails from Boston, where he discovered his passion for flavor, wine, and sake at an early age. While studying environmental science at Harvard University, he simultaneously completed classical culinary training. After moving to Germany in 2020, he transitioned into the beverage industry. Today, he represents Ueno Gourmet, one of the leading importers of premium sake and shochu in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. With over 100 hand-selected products, Ueno has been supplying top-tier restaurants and retailers for nearly 20 years.

The sake tasting will take place on June 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the restaurant Sticks’n’Sushi, located at Kantstraße 152 in 10623 Berlin. The presentation will be conducted in German and English. The event costs 59 euros per person and can be booked via OpenTable – Select a time for your restaurant visit.
