Almir Mavignier is one of Brazil’s first abstract artists and would have been 100 years old in 2025. Since the 1950s, he has achieved international renown as a representative of Concrete Art, in particular Op Art, and as a poster designer.

Lettering – otherwise a central element of poster design – often seems to be missing in his designs. It only becomes visible on closer inspection. Mavignier assumed that once a poster had captivated the viewer, they would be prepared to search for further information.

Mavignier’s posters are advertising and artistic intervention in one. Influenced by the Ulm School, Concrete Art and the international avant-garde, they aim to make the achievements of modernism accessible to a broad public.

For Mavignier, design was the answer to the question of the relevance of art – because it has an impact, is visible and connects with the world. He was convinced: “Art is design, it’s as simple as that”.
