About the special exhibition “Portraits! Surprising Encounters from Botticelli to Lempicka” (October 16, 2026, through March 14, 2027)
In no other genre of painting have artists, from the Renaissance to the present day, adhered so closely to tradition as in portraiture. Portraits were mostly commissioned works, and so, well into the age of photography, the focus remained on the recognisability of the subjects.
This lecture series presents individual, double, family, group, children’s and self-portraits, spanning 500 years of portrait painting. In addition to the stylistic characteristics of each era, it explores symbolic features as well as compositional similarities.
