for the special exhibition "Monet and the Impressionist City" (27.9.2024 - 26.1.2025)
Monet painted his Paris cityscapes from the balcony of the Louvre. His fleeting depiction of the rushing crowd caused irritation among the public at the time. But how did contemporaries perceive urban life?
Starting with Monet, the participants will examine how the forms dissolved towards the end of the 19th century. Examples of this can be found in the works of Monet, but also in those of Paul Cézanne, Sabine Lepsius, Max Liebermann, Édouard Manet and Adolph Menzel, as well as the painters of Barbizon.
