“The man takes off his trench coat. Should he order or wait a little longer? He shifts his position, slumps down as if he doesn’t want anyone to see him, slumps casually in his chair, stretches out his legs, feigns comfort, and fixes his gaze—with the utmost attention—on nothing at all, completely undisturbed.

The annoyance comes anyway, because the one who waits is always the fool. And this particular instance of waiting is, on top of that, a completely unnecessary one—one he didn’t necessarily have to subject himself to. Who, pray tell, is he waiting for, and why? He doesn’t even know this woman; he doesn’t even know her name!” (from: Ulrike Damm, Hadermacher und Vogel, 2024)

How hard this man tries to correct himself, to shape himself.

At the mercy of his own self-presentation, he wants to appear in a certain way.

The promising mistake: He observes himself.

Wanting too much is a wonderful thing, especially when you watch others fail.

But even the one who loses his composure and nonchalance experiences a brief moment of happiness: he loses control of himself—and is free.

So in the realm of the ridiculous, there are only winners. Many of them are the characters in Ulrike Damm’s work. You will hear about them this evening.
