In the play "Being Queer in the 80s," a 50-year-old transgender person tells the story of queerness in Turkey—both the general and the specific.
As the protagonist recounts her story, the play reveals the harrowing history of a terrible time in this country from the perspective of queer people desperately fighting for their lives, often with no one but each other—in parks, third-rate hotels, brothels, nightclubs, on Pürtelaş Street, Bayram Sokak, in Dolapdere, on the street, in police stations, and barracks.
