To mark the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Wall on 9 November 2024, a spectacular image will be created in Berlin at sites such as the Berlin Wall Memorial, the former Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg and further along the former course of the Wall. Historical posters from the Peaceful Revolution in the GDR as well as new posters and banners in the former border area illustrate what was fought for back then and what people are still demonstrating for today: freedom, which is the foundation of an open and diverse society.

Freedom, democracy and human rights

35 years ago, the Berlin Wall was brought down and shortly afterwards an entire political system. The fall of the Wall was the symbolic climax of the Peaceful Revolution in the GDR - and so it was ultimately the courage of the people that went down in the history books.

The fact that during the protests in 1989/90, people courageously took their demands to the streets with posters and banners and successfully rebelled against state repression shows impressively that the will to freedom can topple even a concrete wall and a seemingly insurmountable dictatorship.

The central values of the Peaceful Revolution - freedom, democracy and human rights - are still being demonstrated for today.
On 9 November, the current concern of preserving these values is combined with a tribute to the courage of those involved in the Peaceful Revolution.

Visitors are invited to explore the former course of the Wall with all its historical sites and to engage with the posters, signs and banners on display - both originals from the 1989/90 period and newly designed ones.

The thousands of testimonies, statements and stories will allow visitors to enter into a dialogue about what freedom means for people today.
In the run-up to the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, everyone is invited to submit their exhibition contributions to Kulturprojekte Berlin. In addition, in the months leading up to 9 November, Kulturprojekte Berlin and numerous partner institutions are inviting people to take part in workshops, discussions and happenings to discuss pressing contemporary issues and values such as freedom and democracy. Many contributions for the poster and banner submissions will be created here.
