20. Cinebrasil Festival

Since its inception, one of the festival's main concerns has been to break down stereotypical representations of Afro-Brazilians. It is not always easy to maintain this kind of film selection, but the support and positive reviews from over 55,000 people in recent years encourage us to continue bringing a colourful and multi-ethnic Brazil to the screen.

Despite the many cutbacks in the cultural sector, the Brazilian film landscape has been strong in recent years. Filmmakers have not given up, and the Afro-Brazilian community has also broken through the wall of prejudice and conquered the film market with new and surprising productions.

With ‘Kasa Branca’, Luciano Vidigal is the first black director to win the award for best director in the main competition at the Rio Film Festival, while ‘Virgínia e Adelaide’ tells the story of Brazil's first black psychoanalyst, who also becomes a university professor.

The film ‘Malês’, based on true events, depicts the Malês revolt, the largest uprising of enslaved people in Brazilian history.

Luiz Melodia-No Coração do Brasil tells the story of musician Luiz Melodia, who challenged many norms of the Brazilian music and culture market with his musical freedom and originality.

The films ‘A Melhor Mãe do Mundo’, “Vitória”, ‘Casa de Antiguidades’, ‘Aprender A Sonhar’ and ‘Ainda Não é Amanhã’ also show how much Afro-Brazilians still have to fight to change their future.


Fantastic filmmakers have been invited again this year to discuss these issues with the audience. You can look forward to the presence of Antonio Pitanga, Viviane Ferreira, Luciano Vidigal and João Paulo Miranda Maria, who will be honouring with their presence at this year's festival.
