Our favourite places in Neukölln

Discover contemporary art behind the brick façades of a brewery or an old village with winding streets – in the middle of the big city. Neukölln will surprise you.

What you need to know about Neukölln

Neukölln is renowned for its lively mix of the old and new. This excitingly bustling borough is full of contrasts – from its estates of detached houses in the south to the high-rises in the Gropiusstadt neighbourhood and a vibrant multicultural area around the border to Kreuzberg.

Above all, though, Neukölln is home to people from around the world – as you can easily tell from your choice of street food! Here, the veggie burritos are nestling next to Basque specialities, while US burger outlets rub shoulders with Arabian bakeries, Vietnamese snack bars and upscale restaurants – and yes, Neukölln has those too! For some years, fans of authentic Italian cuisine have raved about the Lavanderia Vecchia, located in an old laundry in the Schiller neighbourhood. Or you could pamper yourself (and your taste buds!) with the fine flavours of sophisticated German-French fusion at the Eins 44 restaurant in a stylishly revamped old distillery.

Art and Culture in Neukölln

Events, the arts and creativity – Neukölln’s urban buzz has attracted a colourful mix of designer labels and creative workers as well as artists from edgy to eccentric. Most individual and shared artists’ studios are located between the Landwehr Canal, Sonnenallee and Hermannstraße. To explore the rich local cultural scene, check out the Heimathafen Neukölln. In an old ballroom, this arts and theatre venue not only showcases unconventional plays with Berlin themes and hosts poetry slam nights, but also presents such unusual events as a Taiwanese song evening. The nearby Neuköllner Oper boasts a varied and original programme of new works and formats in opera and musical theatre exploring contemporary topics.

Our tips for Neukölln

Neukölln is full of refreshing contrasts – whether you take a stroll through its artistic and culinary delights or through one of Berlin's lesser known but most beautiful green spaces.

Green Places in Neukölln

Neukölln also makes relaxation easy with some great green spaces! Take a stroll, for example, through the grounds of the Schloss Britz manor house or the spreading Britzer Garten park. The Britzer Garten is rightly ranked as one of Germany’s loveliest landscaped gardens, with a lake, generous, gently sloping meadows, copses of trees, colourful flower beds and meandering paths past little streams.

With its attractive fountains and water features, the neo-baroque Körner Park, inspired by French palace gardens, is also a popular place to unwind. This small park, with its little canals, elegant hedges, bright flowerbeds and plane trees is a charming green oasis in the heart of the city.

Neukölln's bar scene

With so many new and old favourites to try, Neukölln’s bar scene is a must for night owls. Ä, which opened in 2007 as one of Weserstraße’s first pub bars, remains a popular venue to chill and chat, enjoy a bottle of beer and maybe a game of foosball – which can be a serious business here.

The cocktails served in TiEr, almost directly opposite, are rated as the best in the neighbourhood and draw a very different crowd. If you’re looking for somewhere with a relaxed atmosphere to indulge your wine habit with great wines by the glass and tempting bottles to try, head for Vin Aqua Vin.

The rich diversity of Neukölln brings together a wide variety of people, mentalities and lifestyles. That is what makes this neighbourhood so charming. And the district has launched the FairKiez awareness campaign - to keep it that way.
