The project was born just a few streets away from the Peppi Guggenheim, on the roof of the Klunkerkranich, where the friends gathered for their first sessions. The name also comes from there: Okujou – Japanese for “rooftop terrace.” These gatherings soon evolved into a monthly concert series where the band performed regularly with rotating guests.
As an open collective, Okujou Beat invites musicians from diverse scenes, constantly creating new sonic spaces that bridge club culture and jazz.
Johannes Heger (bass), Izumi Yamamoto (keys), Chikara Aoshima (drums & electronics), and Petros Tzekos (percussion) weave together live electronics, complex polyrhythms, percussive textures, and funky grooves. In between, dreamlike synth soundscapes and improvised soundscapes emerge, intensify, and dissolve back into the rhythm. Okujou Beat—that’s film music without making a film. Okujou Beat—that’s hours of live music sessions that feel like minutes.
