Florentine portraits of women
With Filippo Lippi's Portrait of a Lady (c. 1445), the Gemäldegalerie possesses one of the earliest autonomous portraits of a woman. Marie-Luise Hugler, curatorial assistant at the Gemäldegalerie, will introduce you to the origins of this genre in Florence.
There, at the latest in Botticelli's portraits, an ideal of beauty seems to have been embodied. However, around 1440, Leon Battista Alberti warned his male readers in particular not to seek beauty in the face, but in the soul.
