Film Lecture by Thomas Tode (Hamburg)

Many of the female photographers featured in the exhibition “New Woman, New Vision: The Bauhaus Photographers” also made films. In fact, twelve female Bauhaus students produced their own films.

Two of them collaborated as co-authors on key works of the German film avant-garde without being credited or recognized for their contributions.

In symbiotic living and working communities, they introduced the Bauhaus’s new formal language.

Others found their way to the medium of film through their engagement with photography, developing political and essayistic approaches to their leisure time, social inequality, and big-city life. Mostly documentary in nature, there is only a single short fiction film among them, shot with non-professional actors.

What they share is an interest in modernity, lifestyle reform, and equality. Featuring film clips by Erna Niemeyer, Lore Leudesdorff, Ivana Tomljenovic, Ella Bergmann-Michel, Ellen Auerbach, and Grete Stern.
