The defense of democracy and the values of Europe
In this year's Willy Brandt Lecture, Vice President of the European Commission, Věra Jourová, speaks about the EU's efforts to defend democracy and promote European values in the complex world of today - a world increasingly characterized by populism and disinformation Russian aggression against Ukraine and the transformation towards a more sustainable and digital economy.
In her talk, Věra Jourová looks at the EU's measures to ensure free and fair elections to the European Parliament in 2024, including the European Democracy Action Plan, the Defense of Democracy Package, as well as its work with major online platforms and other relevant actors in the fight against disinformation. It also provides insight into its efforts to promote the rule of law in the EU, its neighboring countries and worldwide.
Afterwards she discussed with Michael Roth, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag. They look at the EU's current tests in the run-up to the election and how Germany and the EU can face them.
