UB40 are among the most successful British bands of the 1980s and have been captivating audiences worldwide for over 45 years with their distinctive, catchy reggae sound. In March, UB40 will be performing their greatest hits in Berlin.
With their signature reinterpretations of classics like "Red Red Wine" (originally by Neil Diamond), "(I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You" by Elvis Presley, "I Got You Babe" (Sonny & Cher), and "Kingston Town" by Lord Creator, UB40 created timeless global hits and made their sound popular across generations.
Their albums "Labour of Love" (1983) and "Promises and Lies" (1993) also achieved great success, both reaching number one in the UK charts. Furthermore, the band continuously released new music and today boasts an impressive body of work with over 50 singles, 20 albums, and more than 100 million records sold worldwide. Multiple multi-platinum awards, four Grammy nominations for Best Reggae Album, and a BRIT Award nomination for Best British Group in 1984 underscore their extraordinary success.
UB40 was founded in Birmingham in 1978 by brothers Robin and Alistair "Ali" Campbell. Together with Earl Falconer, Brian Travers, James Brown, and Norman Hassan, the band formed, and its core lineup remained intact for over three decades. After Ali Campbell's departure in 2008, Duncan Campbell initially took over as lead singer until 2021.
The band name UB40 is derived from the British Unemployment Benefit Form 40, which some members had to fill out themselves before the band's formation. Emerging from the British working class, UB40 developed into the most successful reggae band in Great Britain with socially critical lyrics.
